IAP
in the forefront to lead the war against polio!
Preamble:
In 1988, all the 192 member nations of the WHO unanimously
pledged to the world that they would eradicate polio by the year
2000 with technical leadership from WHO and financial help from
such donor agencies as the Rotary International. The Indian
Academy of Pediatrics is the only technical body of the
pediatricians of the country. In 1989 it advocated the adoption
of pulse polio as a strategy for eradicating polio. In 1994 the
Delhi branch of Indian Academy of Pediatrics actively
participated in the first project launch of Pulse Polio Programme by the Delhi Government which was a spectacular
success. This encouraged the union government to launch this
programme all over the country in 1995.
In 1997, the Indian Academy of Pediatrics formed its first polio
eradication committee to ensure its commitment to the programme.
Ever since then this committee has been functioning actively
under the chairmanship of its successive Presidents. It has
encouraged members of IAP to enthusiastically throw themselves
into this war against polio. IAP has a vast network of committed
coordinators at district and regional levels at most key states.
All the PE related activities are conducted through its
efficient network.
